UK Youth Parliament Annual Sitting 2009

Six young people, elected Members of the Youth Parliament from Hertfordshire (pictured below), took part in the National Annual Sitting of the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) residential last weekend. Held at the University of Kent, the event brought together 350 UKYP Members from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The programme for the weekend was packed full of debates, training sessions, fringe meetings and work on manifestos. There were keynote speeches by Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury and the new Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow. India said  “It was fantastic. This was my first time at such an event and I learnt a lot from it. I attended a training session about using online tools to engage young people in your campaigns; so far we haven’t done this much in Hertfordshire and I want to set something up – perhaps some web content or a facebook page, telling young people how to get involved"

The event was residential, and the delegates were encouraged to network and meet young people from other regions with social events that included a ‘silent disco’, belly dancing and ‘the UKYP’s Got Talent’, a different take on talent shows!
