My Youth, My View
By Sam, St Albans Youth Council
The youth of England are often portrayed in the media as dangerous and anti-social hooligans, incapable of any productive behaviour or friendly thought. It seems necessary that I attempt to eradicate some of the prejudices clearly prominent throughout the country by describing the recent activities of the youth council of St Albans District.
Summer Sounds, Mela, Homophobic Awareness Assemblies; a few of the ideas formulated and organised in the last meeting and all events taking place this year. Summer Sounds is a collection of young bands performing in a festival with fashion and food stalls, Homophobic Awareness Assemblies are in aid of the charity 'Stonewall' and will be conducted in local schools and the Mela is a South-Asian fair with a rich assortment of activities highlighting the cultural diversity of the district.
The youth council also accommodates the views of young people in the area through the use of the Mi Pod events, allowing people to express their own opinions on important issues. As a representative of the youth of the district, the youth council is demonstrating that young people are active and imaginative members of society today.
