Could you be the next MYP?

ukyp1.jpg Calling all young people, aged 11-18, who want to make a change in Hertfordshire!

Hertfordshire UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) are looking for you to be the next Member of Youth Parliament (MYP)

UKYP Herts hold their annual elections in February each year - the process starting with the 'Hustings' events in November when those who are interested in standing as MYP, have their photograph taken and manifesto recorded for channelmogo as well as for publicity throughout schools in Hertfordshire.

The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) enables young people to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better. Run by young people for young people, UKYP gives the young people of the UK, between the age of 11 and 18 a voice.

How does it work? 12 MYPs, one county

You will be elected as a representative for the whole of Hertfordshire (rather than a particular area) although you will find that any consultations and issue based work that you get involved with centre around your school, other local schools and young people within your locality and surrounding areas. This has come about through Hertfordshire being allowed to elect 12 representatives in a county that has only 10 districts. This means two things for you: one, If there is only one candidate standing in your area, there won't be any local competition from other candidates at other schools in the locality and two, you will be standing against others from all over the county so canvassing is all important.

Hustings events

Both events are open for you to drop in when convenient from 3pm - 7pm.

Preparing for Hustings

  • Dress code - you can wear what you feel comfortable in as long as there are no logos - the important thing is that you can relate to young people and get your points across in a way in which they will listen, understand and feel that you are the candidate for them!
  • Manifesto - Your manifesto will be the reasons as to why young people should vote for you so is best to be written in such a way that all young people will be able to identify with it. Issues you are interested need to be covered. For example, issues could be about the environment, education, travel, sexual health, homelessness to name but a few. Please bring a prepared manifesto with you as there will not be time for you to write it from scratch when you arrive.
  • Video and photography - You will be asked to read/say your manifesto in front of a camera as the short video (length of time to be advised) will be uploaded to channelmogo for young people to vote. This must be NO longer than one minute and 100/150 words in length. You will also have your photograph taken for the posters.

You will find out more about the UKYP process at the Hustings events.
