Learning to drive

traffic light at green Before you learn to drive you must obtain a provisional driving licence. You will need to prepare to take both a theory and practical driving test. Different rules apply to cars and mopeds, so check these out on the DVLA website.

Driving lessons can be expensive, but it’s worth learning from a professionally trained person. If you are paying someone to teach you to drive, they must be approved and registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). They should display a green certificate in their windscreen proving this. Try to find an instructor that someone you know has used and found to be good.

Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday, however you can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday.
