Employment trends

What could happen and what this could mean for you making decisions about your future employment

·         Highly skilled jobs will increase as lower skilled jobs decline

It is important to continue in learning, gaining higher skills and qualifications to compete in the labour market

·         Globalisation has increased the number of companies operating internationally

An ability to communicate  electronically and in other languages will boost your chances of employment

·         In recent years the growth in the UK has been in IT, finance and business services, with greater employment opportunities in sport, leisure, social and personal services, with significant opportunities in the public sector.

These areas require skilled individuals with good communication

·         The recent downturn has resulted in job losses in manufacturing, financial, construction, retail and leisure.

You may not consider a career in these areas at the moment, but there are still opportunities to replace those retiring and skill shortages for skilled technicians

·         There will continue to be new technological advances which will transform industries and open up new opportunities

·         A greener economy with a need to develop low carbon resource efficient products and services

·         Changes in the demographics with the population living longer, requiring more social care and health services

These predictions suggest there will be a need for scientists, engineers and technologists, creative individuals with good electronic communication skills, and those with caring and people skills. IT skills will become  a necessity in all jobs.
