The Aimhigher programme is a key component of government policy to widen and so increase participation in higher education.  It seeks to address issues such as increasing opportunities for people from under-represented groups to attend higher education institutions where competition for places is fiercest and which offer the highest  financial rates of  return. Aimhigher has evolved since its inception as a national programme in 2004 and Hertfordshire is one of  44 partnerships in England.

The Government and HEFCE have allocated £239.5 million to the Aimhigher programme for 2008-2011, of  this Hertfordshire has an allocation of  around £1.94 million. This money  will be managed by  the Hertfordshire partnership and used on a range of activities for the 14-19 phase which will include: Campus Visits, Mentoring,  Information Advice, Guidance & Individual Support, Aspiration and Awareness Raising, HE Visits, Summer Schools, Discovery  Days, Master Classes/Study Skills Workshops, Schools & College / WBL based interventions.

Hertfordshire has a strong  Aimhigher partnership lead by the University of Hertfordshire and comprising of  four colleges of further education, Hertfordshire County Council (including the 14-19 Strategy  Group and the Youth Connexions Service), and the Chamber of Commerce.

During this 3 year period of funding the delivery of the Aimhigher agenda  will be gradually devolved to the seven strategic area partnership groups established in Hertfordshire.
