Sleigh Bells review
Music review by Jack
The Anti-Gaga, Bieber-Blasting and Hirshberg-Hater ‘MIA’, has a new little something under her tribal patterned sleeves...
The rapper who brought us the hip-hop anthem ‘Paper Planes’, has managed to fit in running a record label with some of the hottest new bands collaboratively nursing in MIA’s NEET Nest. But one band in particular stands out amongst the pack- SLAYYYBELLLZ (or Sleigh Bells if you prefer conventional forms of orthography) have burst out of Brooklyn with their distorted demolition on modern music.
Consisting of Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller, the pair hooked up in the sweet summer of 2008, and have since pioneered the revival of rebellious, rhythmic and raucous. Leading lady Alexis quit teaching toddlers in order to work on the project with Miller, who was formerly in metal-band Punk ‘The Well’. Recommended by Director/Blogger Spike Jonze, it was love at first listen for MIA who signed them up to NEET recordings in September 2009 and elevated them to the hype of new music.
Their debut ‘Treats’ landed in the US in May, and is yet to hit Blighty until they get a UK label to back them. For now, you can hear five tantalising tracks on their Myspace page below including the ferocious opener ‘Tell 'Em’.
The fusion of distorted riffs and hip-hop beats on ‘Infinity Guitars’ makes it instantly addictive with the sweet vocals of Alexis on ‘Rill Rill’ and ‘Run The Heart’ making the band accessible yet outrageously fascinating.
These guys are the past, the present and the future and with MIA as their musical mother, they should be storming the world any minute soon...
