Hatfield Forum gig review
The Forum in Hatfield, 16th February
Written by Jamie
This Part Is Us got proceedings underway in the attic at the Forum. They played their two new songs, “Nineteen” (one of the highlights of their set) and “Perfect Timing”, which got a good response from the crowd. The breakdown in “Nineteen” was able to start anyone pogoing like Mark Hoppus. They play songs that have forced them into becoming quite big in the local areas, such as: “Epic Song, Bruises and Queen of Hearts of Hearts”. This was the last time they will ever play this live as they make way for new material, which can only be a good thing.
“Epic Song” was preceded by, a fast becoming trademark of the band, clean intro where the guitarists created a mysterious shroud in the venue where you didn’t know what was coming next but when that first chord is struck, every fan knew what was coming. The song lived up to its name - Epic.
The band put the night in good stead by combining their joyous pop punk songs, which have gained them a good following, and their spirited personalities came through on stage.
We Sunk Atlantis then took to the stage. They brought more pop punk and charged their set with catchy chorus's and decent songs. But they just didn’t win the crowd over. They didn’t come across as the fun loving band as their music would suggest and didn’t seem to portray any real energy during their set, but their songs were okay. However, when they announced that it was their last song they received some cruel heckling from the crowd which summed up their set basically.
If they did sink Atlantis, they were definitely going down with it tonight. Maybe on another night their performance might have been better, but they weren’t at their best tonight.
With the fun created by This Part Is Us dwindling through the last forty-five minutes, They Sink Ships took to the stage. It got off to a bad start with one of the guitars deciding to brake within two minutes but it was fixed soon enough and then the fun really began.
They Sink Ships are a poppy rock band who provide great hooks and chorus’s for you to go crazy to. They certainly provided the audience with this tonight. They sounded like an aggressive version of Kids in Glass Houses but they still managed to retain uniqueness in their vocalist (Tom). It’s a combination which they have created to form. Simply first class music.
Tonight They Sink Ships provided everyone with a purely entertaining set. They were undoubtedly the best band on show tonight with This Part Is Us following them, and then We Sunk Atlantis stumbling behind.
