Pioneer gig review

Jamie reviews the latest gig at The Pioneer on December 4th.

In Her Image kicked off the night’s entertainment with a great acoustic cover of ‘Uprising’ by Muse. Great vocals from both members, this was a prelude and warm up to their own song. This was a feel good song where they both showed their talent when they cruised through this rather warm, fun and light hearted song filled with good lyrics and vocals from both guys.

But then a call for Floods came in - a violent roar of Joe’s (also guitarist in None The Less) guitar smashed through the door of the acoustic performance room and the kids knew to just run to it.

Floods announced themselves to the Pioneer crowd with ‘Victory Road’. This song set up the rest of their set list perfectly. They powered through their three other songs and created an energetic, bouncy atmosphere to the venue. Their post hardcore sound was created by great vocals from Jay (ex Thispartisus lead singer) and the screams supplied by James.

They tried their very best to get the crowd going but the crowd just seemed a little lackluster this evening and James even jumped down in with them, trying to spark some movement but with little success. Even though the crowd were a bit lifeless tonight, Floods still put on a fun, energetic show and they set up the evening's energy perfectly.

It was then The Broadcast’s turn to get the crowd into life again, but they brought something different with them tonight. As soon as they started ‘Wake Up’ there was a warmth and brightness in the catchy pop-punk opener that made it seem the evening of a summer day, not a cold, dark, rainy December evening. The next thirty minutes entailed a mixture of great pop-punk, awesome vocals and a few synths thrown in for good measure.

Azza (lead vocalist) and Steve (bass) combined great vocals in ‘Wake Up’ as they performed their first catchy pop-punk sing-a-long song of the evening. Their set list was a bouncy, energetic ball of fun and how the crowd managed to stay still during it was quite strange.

It was time for the headliners, Exit Avenue, to take to the stage and show off their set list compiled with a majority of their new, fresher sounding songs. They started off with ‘Monster’ and it was a monster of a song. The chorus had a huge sound to it and it was combined with the lyrics to make it a memorable first song to play. They filled their thirty minute slot with pop-punk gold and stormed from one song to another showing the crowd why they were headlining the show.

Exit Avenue carried on with that energetic performance that the Floods started off with, their heavy, post hardcore sound, early on in the evening. Then The Broadcast sublimely continued with that energy and added a bit more bounce with their pop-punk. Exit Avenue showed us why they headlined the show with an energetic, electro pop-punk performance with great songs to complete the show.
