Being an Apprentice
Hi I’m Scott, 16 from Stevenage. I am currently doing an Apprenticeship for as a Business Administrator for Youth Connexions Hertfordshire based at the Stevenage office. I heard about Apprenticeships through my Youth Connexions Personal Adviser.
On a day to day basis, my job involves basic administrative tasks and assisting my team. I carry out all of the basic office tasks while creating presentations and spreadsheets. I also do more practical jobs like giving my views at meetings and researching items for the team agenda. In my role, I get involved in interesting things like helping out with the After Dark gigs at Bowes Lyon. I also input into the Drugs and Alcohol pages on Channelmogo.
The hours I work are between 8.30am-4.30pm Monday to Friday. An average day at college consists of scanning in documents and work that I have completed every two weeks.
Since I have been here, I have learnt lots like teamwork skills, IT skills and to enjoy a good days’ work!
The best bit of my job is doing something that I am comfortable with. The worst bit of my job is that I have to get up early. I also love participating in the After Dark gigs and getting involved in local activities.
I want to become a fully serving member of the reserve forces (Territorial Army). I think that by doing this Apprenticeship it will help me as I am gaining valuable life skills as well as working alongside other people. I would definitely recommend an Apprenticeship to other young people – with the prospects that I have, and the support I am receiving, along with the fact that I am now earning my own money is brilliant.
