Equality - support for minority groups

Everyone has the right to be treated fairly and with respect, no matter what their racial origin, religion or sexuality, and no matter what community they live in.

Support is available for many groups of young people who may feel they need to share their experiences with each other, and who may benefit from the help and advice of an expert adult.

BME Support

Young people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities may wish to contact a BME Personal Adviser if they have suffered from bullying, negative stereotyping, abuse or other harmful behaviour from those around them. The Personal Adviser can help them to challenge negative influences, identify positive role models and build their confidence.

To find your nearest BME personal adviser, drop into a Youth Connexions Centre or One Stop Shop.

Support for refugees and travellers

Hertfordshire has a team called the Achievement of Refugees and Travellers Team (or ARTT). They are dedicated to help young people from these communities to succeed in both their education and personal lives. For more information contact Tina Welcome on 01438 844164 tina.welcome@hertscc.gov.uk

Support for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual young people

People attracted to the opposite sex are usually called straight, people largely attracted to people of the same sex are called gay or lesbian and people attracted to both men and women are called bisexual. It may be that you feel you don't fit into any of these categories as it often takes time to fully understand who you are and what sex you are attracted to.

You may have reached a stage where you feel sure that you are not ‘straight’. At least one in ten people in the world are attracted to people of the same or both sexes. Remember, you are not alone feeling like this. There are some good resources and support groups available to help you through this often difficult period of your life.

  Young Pride in Herts

Young Pride in Herts is a new group based in the East Herts and Broxbourne, where young people between 13 -25, can meet, socialise and share experiences with others. The group has been set up by a group of LGBT young people (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) in the area as there is little or no support in Hertfordshire.

In the future they would like to set up other groups around Hertfordshire as transport can be an issue. The group will keep in contact with their members by a private social network site called Ning so if you are unable to attend meetings you can still get involved.

Due to the success of an LGBT quiz night at the beginning of 2010, Young Pride in Herts would like to make it a regular fundraising event. So watch this space! They are trying to have regular meetings on a set day each month with a planned calendar of social and issues based evenings for example, speakers from organisations, films and positive activities.

If you have any ideas for events, programme activities, issues or would like more information please contact them. Email: youngprideinherts@hotmail.co.uk Ring/text: 07968 012987 or join their Facebook group Young Pride in Herts.
