Cyber bullying

Cyber bullying is when someone uses technology like the internet or mobile phone to deliberately hurt or upset someone else. This is a form of bullying and you shouldn’t have to put up with it.

How is it different from other bullying?

Cyber bullying is different because it can happen at any place and any time. Bullies can often hide behind technology so you may not know who they are. Sometimes lots of other people can get involved if the bully is posting things where there lots of other people can see and make comments.

However, cyber bullying can also be evidenced unlike other types of bullying. This can be used as proof to catch the bully and stop them upsetting someone; this could be you or a friend.

What can you do if you are being cyber bullied?

  • Tell someone - report it straight away. Know how to use the 'Click CEOP report button'.
  • Try not to retaliate or respond to the bully.
  • Save all evidence of bullying - if you have nasty emails or things posted on your profile or in emails, save them so you can use it as proof.
  • Block the bully - know how to delete someone from your contacts / IM/ profile and keep all your settings private.
  • Contact your mobile phone provider- if you are being bullied by text. Each network has a special area for this, click here.

 How can you protect yourself?

  • Think before you post - it can be easy to get involved in online bullying without you realising. Avoid joining hurtful campaign groups or commenting on posts that is going to hurt or upset someone
  • What is on your profile that other people can see? Find out more here.
